Balika Utsav at Hanamkonda on 19th December 2011

Tharuni reached its milestone of 12 Years in the service of girls and also successfully completed UNICEF Child Protection Project for the last three years.Tharuni could bring 11000 adolescent girls together in 95 villages,among the four Mandals in Warangal District. The girls have formed into 500 Balika Sanghas actively participating as official Forums for Girl Children. They became the Change Agents in the villages, trying to solve the local problems.They gained confidence to lead a dignified life by creating a niche for their groups.So Tharuni celebrated the "Balika Utsav"to enable the girls to share their success stories, and unite themselves with a strength of togetherness  and decide the future course of action for their further progress.
Tharuni invited twelve Women Achievers from 12 different fields as Role Models for the girls to get inspired, and felicitated the women with impressive mementos.Two Best Balika Sanghas from each Mandal and best Balika achievers were given prizes.The Tharuni Executive Board Members were also felicitated for their services. Kalajathas and cultural programs depicting the problems of girl child were very impressive. Smt. C.S.Ramalakshmi, IFS,Commissioner Sericulture, Government of Andhra Pradesh,and Rajasekar UNICEF District Manager  were  the  Guests of Honour for the event. Tharuni Coordinators were given mementos by Ramalakshmi  for their best efforts to serve the girl children.Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, thanked  one and all for the support given to Tharuni for the last 12 years. 

Balika Melas in Four Mandals by Tharuni

Tharuni conducted Balika (Girl) Melas (Meetings) in the Four Mandals where the UNICEF sponsored the Child Protection Project for the last three years. As the Project is  being closed by the UNICEF by December 2011,Tharuni invited all Mandal Officials,Mandal Samakhyas, V.C. P.C.Members,Head Masters and Teachers,and Anganwadi Workers for the Meetings, where more than five hundred Balika sangha Members attended at each Mandal headquarters. Geesukonda Mandal Tharuni coordinator Kavitha organised the Meet on 5th December 2011.Station Ghanpur Meet was held on 6th December 2011,coordinated by Srinivas,Deveruppula Mandal on 10th, byVijay, and finally at Dharmasagar Mandal Meet was held on 11th December by Ranjith. UNICEF Project Manager  Rajasekhar, along with Tharuni Director attended the Meetings and they handed over the Girls groups to the local officials and Angan wadi Workers as a formality.The girls made a pledge that they will continue the activities for ever and empower themselves.Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha assured them that the girls will be supported by their Organisation in a suitable manner with the help of the community. 

Consultation with Media Workshop on 3rd December by C.W.C Warangal

The Child Welfare Committee, Warangal District conducted a Workshop with Media, collaborating with NGOs, A.P. Alliance for Child Rights, Mahitha and Tharuni on 3rd December 2011 at Suprabhat Hotel. Registrar NALSAR Dr.Madabhushi Sridhar Acharya, Vallishwar, Editor, Andhra Pradesh journal, a senior Journalist, Dr.Sunil Professor, NALSAR and Rajasekhar, Project Manager UNICEF were the guests of honour who spoke on role of Media in presenting about child rights.Dr. Mamatha Chair Person CWC presided over the Meeting.Dr Mamatha explained the importance of Media to protect the children of their survival rights,protection rights, development rights and participation rights, and the hardships they face when an information is given against  children.The children are voiceless, So the Media is expected to give a proactive report about them she said. Dr. Sridhar a Professor in Law and also a Columnist in Media channels,gave an impressive presentation on Juvenile Justice Act 2006,stressing the importance of  humanitarian touch for the Media professionals. Rajasekhar, UNICEF Child Protection Project Manager explained the need of bringing out the needs of children and solving their problems through  publicity by the Media.Vallishwar highlighted the role of rural journalists and their social responsibility, and the need of collective responsibility, and effort to solve the problems of people.He also said that they need interaction with people from different perspectives, with a bit of tactfulness and bravery to reach their goals.The Work shop was very successful in bringing all the Media Channels of communication on  a single platform to discuss their common problems, Vedio presentation by Dr Mamatha and Dr. Sridhar was very impressive.CWC Member and Advocate Revathi,ICPS,ICDS and women welfare Dept. Officials and people from different walks of life were present.

Congratulations "Devanuru Balika Sanghas' . We are proud of you.

It is a significant  achievement of the  four Tharuni Balika Sanghas (girls' groups) of Devanuru village in Dharmasagar Mandal in Warangal District, as they could solve the problems. When the Vanitha Telivision Channel and Tharuni Director visited the village, they were informed by the Sarpanch and local people that the Balika Sanghas are working wonders  for the progress of the village.The four groups could achieve the long pending issues of getting the Street lights repaired,Their  next achievement is  of getting good rice to be cooked for the Mid day Meal in the school. They  also.  stopped a child marriage of their friend who was studying 7th class, aged 13 years, with a software professional. Vanitha T.V. Team are televising on the issues of adolescent girls and children on child marriages and child labour etc.Nihal Kovvali, Advocate from Hyderabad and Srinivas, an Indian Administrative Service aspirant also accompanied the Tharuni Team and everyone appreciated the sincere efforts of the Balika Sanghas.

Child line competitions and Walkathon Run

Drawing and painting competitions were held for students of Government schools in the four Mandals and certificates were given for the participants on 12th November, 2011.
Signatures were taken  to bring awareness to general public to make them commit for protection of child rights.
Walkathon Run was held in Warangal on 14th November early morning to protect children from abuse and harassment.The Run started by taking oath to that effect and ended with signatures by the participants, supporting the cause. The Participants include 400 students from all colleges and National institute of Technology, seven hundred Police personnel,along with their Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar,District Collector Sri Rahul Bojja, District Child Welfare committee Chair person and Members and general public,

Stake holders Meet on UNICEF Project on 12th November 2011

The Stake Holders Meet of UNICEF Project was held on 12th November at the Collector's Conference Hall to review the Project.Mandal Officials, Panchayat Leaders, School Head masters, Teachers  Anganwadi Workers Tharuni Balika Sangha Leaders from four mandals attended. The Stake holders stressed the need for continuing the Project for the progress and development of children for strengthening the community structures  in the villages.

Child Helpline Se Dosti Programme from 8th November 2011

Child Line Se Dosti Programme was started on 8th November with Suraksha Bandham, when children tied rakhies to Police personnel and other officials including The District Collector of Warangal. The children tied rakhies to the Sub Inspectors  at  Eturu Nagaram, Mangapet, and Thadvai also. The Police assured that they will protect the children in distress.
On 9th November Dosti corners were set up in public places like  Bus stands, Public Parks and Chowrasthas to bring awareness of Child Help Line 1098 to general public.Competitions were conducted in Colleges to students in Essay Writing on Child Rights and Child Labour and other problems.
Child Line Protection oath was taken by students and teachers in all the Government High Schools in the three Mandals of Eturu Nagaram, Mangapet and Thadvai. on 10th November.
Health camps were  conducted  in Gurukul Hostels for students in three schools by Government Doctors and Rural Medical practitioners in the three Mandals on 11-11-11.

Tourist Spot at Cheryala in Warangal District

Cheryala in Warangal District, near Jangoan is going to become a Tourist spot in near future with all amenities like Restaurants, cottages,shopping complex,in addition to the Work sheds for the Painters, The Executive Director of Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation B. Srinivas announced, when he visited Cheryala  on 12th October 2011.R. K. Anil Consultant for Rural Tourism Projects also accompanied the Director, to address the Artisans. They went through the process of the paintings of Cheryala.Sri. Srinivas explained to the painters  the objectives of the Project undertaken at Cheryala,which will not only gives a facelift to the paintings, the Artisans   will also  be trained in new designs,marketing and enterprising skills.The local youth will get employment as service providers and guides and other jobs. R.K. Anil had given guidelines to the N.G.O Tharuni about implementation and importance of the Project.Dr. Mamatha, Executive Director,Tharuni presided the Meeting for the Artisans.An Office of Tharuni was established, with Ailesh Yadav, to coordinate the Project activities,on 23rd, October.

Workshop on Capacity building for young women

Tharuni coordinated with Nehru Yuva Kendra to conduct a three day workshop on capacity building to forty young women of Warangal District at Catholic Church, Mariapuram near Geesukonda from 9th to 11th October 2011. N.Y.K. Coordinator A.V. Vidya Sagar and Tharuni Director Dr.Mamatha and other Resource persons spoke on Reproductive Health,HIV AIDS, Personality Development, Legal Enactments pertaining to women etc, The young women  of 18 to 25 years of age participated very actively in the interactive sessions for three days.

Bathukamma by Balika Sanghas

The Balika Sanghas in the four Mandals have played 'Bathukamma' during Dassara festival days to revive their culture and traditions. Tharuni team, along with their Director visited most of the villages and played Bathukamma along with the girls and the prizes and mementoes were given for the best decorated Bathukammas.Kota Ram sponsored the prizes in the memory of his son Kota Akhilesh.Tharuni is indebted to Mr. Ram.

Congratulations Safia

Tharuni coordinators are to be congratulated for their effort to stop child marriages in the villages.It is really a tough job for the lone coordinator in the villages who come to know about a child marriage to be held in the villages. By the time they come to know about the event, the parents make all arrangements, and they mentally prepare the girl to get married with the man decided by them. During this Dassara festival days, many child marriages are held in the villages.
The case of Sravani who was married off in a hurry at Kareemabad, Warangal is one such case,where she was married to a 42 year old man, who got his first wife died and second wife living  with two children.By the time Tharuni Director and Police rushed there he tied the knot, now facing legal case against him and her parents.
Safia, Tharuni Coordinator could boldly face the wrath of the parents and saved Mariamma, who is 16 years old getting married, next day.Safia was threatened, abused for stopping the marriage.Tharuni congratulates the coordinators, who take all risks to stop the child marriages.

Aata Vidupu, An award-winning film by Tharuni Children

Aata Vidupu a short film on the forgotten games of children has won the Media Awards  2010 by UNICEF. The film was videographed by the girl children of Tharuni Balika Sanghas. It is relevant in the present circumstances, where the children are playing computer games, ignoring the importance of outdoor games.

Mulla Bandham, A film on child Marriages by Tharuni Children

Tharuni, a Voluntary Organisation working for abolition of child marriages,trained young women on Videography, who have contested for the Award winning films conducted by UNICEF, in 2010. They could make six films on different social issues out of which they got award for two films. This film "Mulla Bandham" highlights on the demerits of child marriages.The viewers are requested to campaign against child marriages and educate and empower the girl child.

Tharuni Ooyala is a 3 minute film about motherhood & infanticide which is heart wrenching and sensitizes you about your responsibility to protect girl children. Well Conceptualized with engrossing voice, the film is the best from Tharuni Media Creations. The Cradle program started by Tharuni, an NGO which works with girl children in the District of Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, India & helps to save them. 584 Leaders of Girls' Groups & 90 Boys Groups' Exposure visits

There are five hundred and eighty four Balika Sanghas and 90 Balura sanghas, in the four Mandals of Ghanpur, Dharma Sagar, Geesukonda and Deveruppula in Warangal  District, working under Tharuni. The leaders of both the groups are being taken on an exposure Visit to the Police Station, Post Office, Mandal Revenue Office, M.P.D.O's office, and primary Health Center to enlighten the Boys and Girls about the functioning of these offices.The leaders in turn explain to their groups about the importance of these offices in day today life.

U.N.I.C.E.F Girl Child Media Awards, Jury Meeting on 30/09/11 at Hyderabad

U.N.C.E.F.  conducted the Jury Meeting at Hyderabad on 30th August 2011, for the Girl Child  Media Awards 2012. Tharuni Director, Dr. Mamatha was selected as one of the Jury Members.

Teachers' Day 'celebrations & Felicitations to Dr. Mamatha

Tharuni celebrated Teachers day on 5th September 2011,at the four Mandal headquarters of Station Ghanpur, Dharmasagar, Geesukonda and Deveruppula.Twenty Teachers were felicitated with shawl and mementoes for their best services.
Andhra Balika Vidyalaya  was established by Padisala Veera Bhadrayya a Freedom fighter before Independence, to facilitate Girls Education in Warangal. The Institution celebrated Teachers' Day,by inviting the Vice Chancellor of Kakatiya University, Sri Venkata Rathnam, as chief Guest. More than one thousand girl students  participated in the event. Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha was invited as Guest of honour. She spoke on the life skills required  for the girls to empower themselves.She was felicitated on the occasion.

Workshop on Effective implementation of J.J.Act by C.W.C on 6/09/11

The Child Welfare Committee, Warangal  District, organised a Workshop on effective implementation of Juvenile Justice Act on 6th September. A.L. Kismath kumar, Director, Juvenile Welfare and Correctional Services,was the Chief Guest on the occasion.He spoke in detail about the powers of C.W.C, Juvenile Justice Board and explained about Juvenile Justice Act 2006.
District Collector Rahul Bojja and Superintendent of Police Rajesh kumar ,I.P.S, spoke on the importance of child protection. Heads of line Departments like I.C.D.S. Labour Dept, Rajeev Vidya Mission Education, Health, Police,I.C.P.S.Members,N.G.Os  and Child Helpline Members attended the Workshop. C.W.C.Chair person Dr. Mamatha presented six months report on the activities  taken up by C.W.C in Warangal District.

Child Help Line Meeting at Thadvai on 29th August 2011

The Child Help Line Meeting was held at Thadvai in Warangal District, attended by the Tribal Girls of six schools to enlighten themselves about Children protection who are in distress, with the help of Toll Free Number of 1098.Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha, Sub Inspector of Police Venkata Rathnam and Mandal Project Development Officer spoke about the importance of Child Help Line.

Kalajathas by Tharuni Cultural Team

Tharuni Cultural Team have given performances of kalajathas to stop child marriages and on empowerment of girl children, in forty two villages of four Mandals of Stn. Ghanpur, Geesukonda, Dharmasagar and Deveruppula in Warangal District, for the last two months.The concluding programme was held at Nelapogula Village in Deveruppula Mandal on 27th August 2011.

Tharuni Gurukul achievements in 2011

Tharuni Gurukul has a feather in its cap by congratulating its two young women Priyanka and Sirisha, who could join the Engineering colleges at Hyderabad, this year. Gurukul a Branch of Tharuni, trained hundreds of girls in soft skills, while improving their academic standards, though they come from the lowest strata of life, without a proper environment and enough financial resources to reach their targets of education. Many could get higher studies with the intervention and motivation extended by Tharuni Gurukul for the last eight years from 2004. Even house wives who were school drop-outs in 4th or 5th standard, are prepared to write Eligibility tests of Open University, joining Degree courses at Warangal and Hyderabad. Tharuni extends greetings to all these achievers and hopes they get many more laurels here after.

UNICEF visit to Warangal 23rd August 2011

UNICEF, Hyderabad Representatives, (state level) visited Warangal to observe the progress made by NGOs on the Girl child Project in the District. Murali Krishna and Sheela met Tharuni Balika Sanghas at Dharmasagar, interacted with the girls groups and appreciated our Director and Tharunis for the changes that were brought in their lives. Rayavarapu Pratap and local leaders and people appreciated the progress brought by Tharuni by stopping the child marriages in the villages, for the young women.

Wall News Training to Balika sanghas

Tharuni and Mahita NGOs, collaborating with Child Protection Alliance held a Meeting to enlighten the thirty leaders of Balika Sanghas on the importance of wall news concept in the rural areas, on 18th August 2011, at Warangal. The girl leaders train their groups on this concept, in villages, to give information and news relevant to the people, by writing on the walls, at prominent places.

65th Independence Day celebrations by Tharuni

Tharuni Teams at Warangal and Hyderabad celebrated 65th Indian Independence Day at their Office premises in a befitting manner.All the Coordinators of Tharuni and Students, men and women attended the Flag hoisting ceremony. Dr. Mamatha paid tributes to the National leaders who contributed their might for the freedom struggle.
Tharuni Gurukul Children sang patriotic songs after the Flag hoisting by Karunakar Reddy, President, Nagarjuna Colony Welfare Association at Hyderabad premises.Dr. P. Hemalatha Devi, Coordinator of the Gurukul, spoke on the occasion.

Flag Hoisting at M.Manovikasa Kendra by Mamatha

Tharuni Director Mamatha Raghuveer was invited as Chief Guest to Mallikamba Manovikasa kendra to hoist the national Flag on the occasion of 65th Indian Independence Day Celebrations. There are eighty Differently able children in the centre, where they are trained with life skills along with education. Dr. Mamatha contributed five thousand rupees to feed them one day, appreciating the efforts of the organisers of the Kendra. She appealed to the public to come forward to contribute to their might for the welfare programmes of the inmate children.

Artisans' cooperatives formed in cheryala

Tharuni Executive Director Dr. Mamatha visited Cheryala on 11th August 2011, in order to formulate The Artisan cooperatives in their village to facilitate in a better way to produce and market their products of Nakhashi paintings at national and international levels.

Training of 200 Wardens of welfare hostels

The District Child Welfare Committee Members and Chair Person Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer conducted one day training programme in colloboration with UNICEF, to the two hundred Wardens of the Welfare Hostels of Scheduled castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward classes on how to protect the rights of children. Additional Joint Collector B. Sanjeevaiah attended the Programme as Chief Guest. There are 40,000 children in these hostels in the District.

Plan India visit to Tharuni- 29-07-11

From Plan India Hyderabad, Programme Manager Bhavani along with her Financial Analysts visited Tharuni Office at Warangal , in addition to Balika Sangha's Meetings in Geesukonda Mandal on 29th July.They were very much impressed with the empowered young women who were very active in conducting the Meetings and analysing the issues to be solved by them in their villages. The Team appreciated the changes brought by Tharuni in the lives of the girl children.

By the appeal made by The Child Welfare Committee of Warangal District S. Rajayya, Member of Parliament, and the District Collector Released Rupees Five Lakhs from M.P. Local Area Development Fund to renovate the Sisu Gruhas (Children Homes), which are in a dilapidated condition. The renovation work is already under progress.
Two girl child labourers working as domestic help were rescued in warangal, and rehabilitated in the rescue homes, under Child Help Line 1098.

Child Help Line 1098 In warangal District

Child Help Line 1098 was officially launched by the District Collector Bojja Rahul in warangal to day on 20th July 2011. This is a 24 hour free help line for the children who are in need for care and protection.
This is being run by Child Line India Foundation, in collaboration with Women and Child Welfare Department of Government of India.
This Project is installed in four Mandals in the District,1.Eturu Nagaram 2.,Mangapeta, 3. Govindaraopeta, and 4. Thadvai, being facilitated by four NGOs, MARI,Pragathi,Tharuni,and FMMSSS.
Dr. Mamatha, Chair Person of child Welfare Committee Warangal District presented about the role and responsibilities of Line departments in rehabilitating the rescued children through help line, and the concept of child line Advisory Board.
The Collector also inaugurated the pamphlet on child help line, brought out by Tharuni.

Statistical Day on 29th June 2011

Statistical Day was celebrated at the Collectorate of Warangal, in which the Chief Planning Officer, Statistical Department enlightened on the Census 2011 and the ratio of Men and Women in the District.
Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha spoke on the dwindling statistics of women and girl children in the state, particularly in Warangal District.

Balika Sanghas' leaders traning-27th June

Girls Groups (Balika Sanghas) leaders training was given At Devaruppula on 27th and at Station Ghanpur on 30th, enlightening them on leadership skills and personality development by Tharuni Team.
Training was given on compulsory Marriage Registration, and birth certificates, to the Panchayat Secretaries and village revenue officers of Deveruppula Mandal on 28th June 2011, by Tharuni.

Boys groups' Leaders Meet At Warangal on 26th June 2011

Tharuni organised a pilot Meeting for young, rural boys, aged between 13 to 18, on 26th June 2011, at Divya Deepti Bhavan, Warangal. The main objective of the meeting was to encourage them to come forward and express their concerns and challenges on a unique platform called the'Balura Sangha' ( Boys' Group).
Tharuni is already having 'Balika Sanghas' (girls' groups) for 12000 girls from four Mandals in the District. The Executive Body of Tharuni had decided to introduce Boys Groups, so that they also unite together to face the challenges and hardships, while improving their skills, to become responsible future citizens of India.
The meeting was arranged for the leaders of the Balura Sanghas of 90 villages. They were introduced with the inputs of how to form sanghas and their advantages, by Dr. Mamatha.Deputy Health Education officer, Srinivas, enlightened the boys on reproductive health and hygiene.Sri Prabhu chaithanyananda of Ramakrishna Mission spoke on their personality development.Mama Mahesh of RED F.M.(Radio Jackie) explained about the bad habits and how to control oneself against them. Ms. Surekha,Director Epitome, Hyderabad, and Tharuni Advisory Board Member conducted games on leadership and personality development.
Boys were very happy and enthusiastic to attend the meeting and Tharuni assured them full cooperation to rejuvenate them and strengthen their sanghas.

Rescue operation of a girl child from bonded labour

The Child Help Line, Warangal,Child Welfare Committee Members,labour Department Officials, along with Tharuni Director, conducted a rescue operation of an orphan minor girl from the house of a Government Employee. Thaslima, aged 13 years now, had been working as a domestic help for the last three years, bearing all hardships and abuse. She was rescued on 24th June and given food and shelter at Kasthurba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Hasanparthi near Warangal, after initiating legal action against the person and his wife for keeping the child labour in their house.
We all know that, a child below 14 years of age is not supposed to work as a labourer.

Child Help Line training to the Team Members

The Child Help Line Foundation Of India, Mumbai, in collaboration with Department of Women and child Welfare, Government of India conducted a training programme from 14th June 2011, at Divya Deepti Bhavan Warangal to the Tharuni Team Members and Sub-Centre Head on the Child Protection issues.The Sub-Centre is started at Eturu Nagaram and Child Help line Centres at Govindaraopet, Thadvai,and Mangapet in Warangal District. District Child Welfare committee Chair Person, Dr.Mamatha Raghuveer spoke on the problems 0f children and how to protect them from atrocities.The training was held for five days.
Any child or any well wisher of the child in the area can call the Toll Free number -1098- when he/she is in distress to get protection and help from the Police immediately.

Children to go to schools/not work

The' Vidya Pakshosthavalu' programme of the State is being implemented innovatively by Tharuni. On an experimental basis Tharuni initiated a Rally by the Parents in the villages who are supposed to send their children regularly to school, instead of making them work,along with teachers, villagers and Tharuni coordinators with placards and a big banner,with the slogan "children have right to education and parents have responsibility to send them to school''. In Telugu "chaduvu pillala hakku,Chadivinchadam peddala badhyatha'. The Tharuni team reach the school and make the parents sign on the banner accepting to send their ward to school as a promise. If they fail to send, the village community will question them, along with the teachers and Tharuni, as the Banner is hanged to the wall in the school. Hope an attitudinal change will come among the parents realising the importance of education.

UNICEF Arranged Exposure visit for NGOs

UNICEF, Warangal arranged an exposure visit to the NGOs of the district who are working in the Child Protection Project to observe the work of Navjeevan, an NGO working for the street children and orphans for the last two decades at Vijayawada, Krishna District. Tharuni sent the four Mandal Coordinators, twenty cluster coordinators, along with the Manager for the visit from 23rd to 26th of May 2011.
They all met the NGOs Forum, Child Rights' Advocacy forum to discuss about the child protection programmes undertaken by Navjeevan organisation. They have also visited model parliament by children at mandal and district level solving their problems. They observed The Child Welfare Committee activities in Krishna District.

Boys Groups initiated by Tharuni

Boys groups are formulated in the Government Schools in Geesukonda and Dharmasagar Mandals by Tharuni to solve their problems. As Girls Groups are successful it is high time that Boys also can achieve everything with united effort. The hope of Tharuni certainly bears fruit very soon.

Girls groups in schools by Tharuni -a great change

There are thousands of Balika Sanghas ( Girls Groups), in the government schools already existing in the four mandals where Tharuni is working for the last 12 years in the Warangal District. They are actively involving themselves not only in their personal problems but also in the community activities, meeting every fortnight.
Really it is a great change Tharuni brought in the lives of the adoloscent girls. The Balika sangham at Viswanathapuram village in Geesukonda Mandal is one of the examples where the girls installed placards to protect and save the people from committing suicides and also against polluting the Water tank in the village. similarly the Balika sangham in Vanchanagiri village in the same Mandal assembled as a parliament, identified the problems in the village, made a representation to the Sarpanch of the village to solve them immediately. In another village Manugonda, Ravali, studying 9th class, did not agree to work in the cotton fields when her mother asked her to do so as she prefers to go to school.She erected the placard against child labour in the middle of the village.Tharuni congratulates the Balika sanghas for their concern for the development of their villages.

Tharuni Programmes in the Summer of 2011

*Tharuni Volunteers stopped twelve Child Marriages in the Geesukonda Mandal of Warangal District.
*More than hundred school drop out children were admitted in the schools in the four Mandals.
School bags were distributed to them along with the stationery. Twenty five in Deveruppula Mandal, fifty two in Station Ghanpur Mandal , eighteen in Dharmasagar and few more in Geesukonda Mandal were identified as drop out children by Tharuni Volunteers.
* Tharuni conducted survey on the water and sanitation problems in the government schools under the supervision of UNICEF and submitted the report, to be resubmitted to the Centre for Environmental Science. It is a pity that many schools do not have these basic amenities leading to many school drop outs every year. Hope the Government reacts to this situation and improves the sanitation and water facilities in the schools.
*Under the sponsorship of UNICEF Tharuni arranged Tuitions for the students of 8th, 9th, and 10th classes in three villages in Geesukonda Mandal and two villages in Dharmasagar in the Mathematics subject.

Dr. Mamatha's presentations as a Resource Person

Dr Mamatha Director Tharuni, made her presentation on combating Child Marriages at the Integrated Child Protection Society Representatives' Meeting held at Hyderabad on7th April 2011.
She also addressed all the Police Officials of Warangal on Child Marriage Act and Domestic Violence Act and the role of the Police in helping the distressed women, in their District Crime Meeting conducted by the Superintendent of Police on 8th April 2011.
Dr. Mamatha attended on the evening of 8th April, District Legal services Authority Meeting and participated in the interactive session, where in Hon'ble JusticePrakasha Rao, Executive Director State Legal Services Authority was the Chief Guest.

Child Welfare Committee visits 5th April 2011

Child Welfare Committee Chair person Dr. Mamatha and her Team visited Sisu vihars and orphan children Homes to see the improved amenities for the inmates and distributed cup cakes for all the children, sponsored by one of the Bakers from Hyderabad.

Work shop at Devaruppula on 23rd March 2011

Tharuni conducted a Workshop for Purohits (priests), community leaders and youth on how to stop child marriages and disadvantages of early marriages at Devaruppula on 23rd March, 2011.
Again another workshop was conducted by Dr. Mamatha and her Team for the Self Help Group Women at the same place on how to combat child marriages on 28th March 2011.

US friends' visit to Warangal on 18th and 19th March2011

Ms. Mary Richie, Ms. Reagan, Ms. Marissa from Women Crisis Center, Kentucky, Of United States of America visited Warangal and Hyderabad on 18th, and 19th, March 2011, as guests of Tharuni to study and observe the status of Adolescent Girls and women in Andhra Pradesh.
They attended Kalajathas and other cultural programmes held by Kakathiya Cultural team of Tharuni at Gorrekunta village in Geesukonda Mandal. They also met Balika sangha girls at Pallagutta village in Station Ghanpur Mandal. They enjoyed the hospitality of Tharuni Team under the leadership of Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer. They also participated in the Holi celebrations in a Tribal village. The craft work of the village women were appreciated by them. The girls painted Mehendi to the guests. They also attended an Indian Marriage at Hyderabad. They met the Police officials working on human trafficking. They appreciated Tharuni for its dedicated work serving the girl children and women.

Dr. Mamatha,s opinion on Euthanasia in Andhra Bhoomi

The Andhra Bhoomi Telugu Daily News Paper focussed on the issue of Euthanasia (mercy killing) in page number 11 of 17th March 2011. Dr Mamatha, Tharuni Director gave her opinion to not to make it legal in our country, as it may lead to many complications." When a person is not allowed to commit suicide how any one can permit mercy killing?" she opined. It will lead to a type of murder she said.

Awareness Workshop at Deveruppula on 15th March2011

Tharuni conducted Awareness Workshop on child Marriages and UNICEF Child Protection Project to all the MPTCs, Sarpanches of eighteen villages of Deveruppula Mandal on 15th March 2011, to stop child marriages in their villages.

Tharuni under the supervision of Dr. Mamatha, its Director successfully conducted the Data Mission Survey Project on Khadi Village Industries Exhibitions on various issues of their management and marketing their products etc. and submitted its report.

Women's Day celebrations on 8th March2011

The InternationalWomen's Day was celebrated all over the world on 8th March 2011, with the Theme identified by United Nations Organisations as 'Equal access to Education,Training on Science and Technology, a path way to decent work for women''.We are also celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the event started by Clara Jetkin, Leader of women's Office for the Social Democratic party in Germanyon March 11. Tharuni congratulates all the women of the World. It is high time that women should prove that they are born perfect.
8th March is an eventful day for the Tharuni Organisation, as their dynamic Director Dr. Mamatha was felicitated by the Department of women Welfare and child Development, Government of Andhra Pradesh among the few women selected At Hariharakala Bhavan, Secunderabad.While participating in the panel discussion on the theme, Mamatha spoke on the problems of the girl child and to overcome them ,she gave examples of few success stories.She thanked the Authorities for recognising her services, and in a humble way she said it will add more responsibilities in the service of girl children.

Child Club formation in schools

Child clubs were formulated in all upper primary and high schools with one teacher and five leaders and members.Later they were trained on the responsibilities and role of child club and rights of children in the last week of February.
More than five hundred Balika Sanghas which include school dropouts also were trained on their role and responsibilities to protect a girl child against any type of atrocities held against them by net working and group activities in all the three mandals.

Training for Teachers against Corporal punishment

Training was conducted by Tharuni for one hundred seventy Teachers of three Mandals of Dharmasagar, Geesukonda, and Station Ghanpur Government Schools against Corporal Punishment and latest Education Enactment.
There were 48 children out of schools from 18 villages of Devaruppula Mandal and 27 children were admitted into Residential Bridge schools and Government schools immediately.
Village Commiittees were formed to work on welfare and protection of children.

Children Film Producers at Media Awards function

Tharuni Children Film Producers who bagged the Awards recently were asked to be present at the Media Awards Function held at C.E.S.S. Ameerpet Hyderabad on 5th February 2011 along with their Director. The children while thanking the UNICEF for giving an opportunity to produce films, requested . all Media Channels to broadcast their films.
They are grateful the channels who telecast their films.

C.W.C. met Dt. Collector

Child Welfare Committee Members and Chair Person met the District Collector and Joint Collector to request them to improve the the basic amenities in the Orphan Homes of the children in the District on 2nd February.
A Training Programme was held at NISIET,Yousufguda, Hyderabad for the Chair Persons of Child Welfare Committees of the State by the Women Welfare and Child Development Department of Government of Andhra Pradesh on25th and 26thFebruary 2011 to enlighten them on Adoptions of Children and Juvenile Justice Act.

C.w.C Committee assumed charge on 31st January2011

Child Welfare Committee of Warangal District assumed charge on 31st January 2011.The Members and Chair Person attended the Meeting and made few observations about the prevailing conditions, after visiting the Government Short Stay Home for the Children. They also met the District Collector, Joint Collector, Project Director of ICDS, and The District Superintendent of Police.

Republic Day Celebrations

Tharuni celebrated 62nd Republic Day at the Office premises at warangal. All the four Coordinators from the four Mandals of Devuruppula, Station Ghanpur,Geesukonda,and Dharmasagar,along with other Team Members,Some of the girls from Balika Sanghas, Men,women and children of Neelam Enclave Apartments attended the Flag Hoisting function.Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, Director Tharuni hoisted the flag. Children sang patriotic songs. Sweets were distributed.
Tharuni Gurukul celebrated the Republic Day at Hyderabad in the premises of Branch Library, Nagarjunacolony along with the Library Staff, School children and the public.
Dr Mamatha enlightened the cluster coordinators and the Tharuni team on the Reproductive Health and HIV AIDS on 26th January at the Office for two hours, in order to extend the information to the Balika Sanghas in their villages by them.

Tharuni Balika Sanghas leaders Meet24-01-11

Tharuni Balika Sanghas (Girls Groups) Leaders Meet was arranged on 24th January 2011 at warangal.150 girls from one hundred fifty Sanghas participated to have inputs on leadership skills and life skills.Swamy Prabhu Chaitanya, Organizing Secretary of Sri Ramakrishna Mission, Warangal was the Chief Guest. He enlightened the participants on Indian Value System, Sanathana Dharma applicable to modern way of living, to be followed by all of us. Tharuni Advisory Board Members Raghuveer I.F.S. advised the girls on Mudra Yoga to achieve the goals of life and on importance of discipline to become good leaders. Surekha, Director EPITOME, Hyderabad, trained the girls how to achieve their targets as successful leaders, by participatory method by playing with balloons. Rajasekhar District Manager, UNICEF, explained the role and importance of Balika Sanghas in combating child marriages and child labour and other social evils.He advised them to not to be influenced by media channels. He assured that UNICEF provides Books and play material to the groups. Dr. Mamatha, Director Tharuni highlighted the success the girls groups can achieve by solving their problems with net working , unitedly.The participants were enriched with knowledge with the reading material given by Tharuni.
