A.P.State Women Commission's 'Women's Safety Fortnight' from 25th Nov. to 10th December 2013-Tharuni's collaborationon 27th

Andhra Pradesh State women's Commission inaugurated 'International Day to stop violence against women from 25th November at Indira Priya Darshini Hall, Nampalli, Hyderabad from 10 A.M.to 2 P.M. Many reputed Non Governmental Organisations are taking part in the Events till 10th December. in this 'Women's safety fortnight.' initiated by U.N.It will be concluded on 'International Human Rights Day'.

Tharuni and 'ASMITA' collaborated with the Commission on 27th November to highlight the issue on Child Marriages Act 2006  and Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act of 2002.Video films were displayed on the issue. Smt anuradha, I.P.S and Smt Neelam Sahani I.A.S. and Smt Tripurana Venkatratnam Chair Person of the Commission spoke on the social evil of Child marriages, and the importance of registration of marriages.
Tharuni displayed 'Mulla Bandham' short film and Puppet show video.Dr. Mamatha spoke on the importance of prohibiting Child marriages which hinder the progress of the Country at large.
Tharuni coordinators Ailesh and Bhagya Lakshmi distributed the Acts in Telugu to all the participants.

Marathon 10-k Run at Hyderabad on 24th November 2013-Tharuni Team participation

Tharuni Executive Director Dr.Mamatha along with her team of 40 members participated actively in the Marathon 10-K Run on the People's Plaza Necklace Road on 24th November, The 11th Edition of the Hyderabad 10 K Run  meant for 'Run for a Cause". This year Marathon hopes to raise substantial funds for the relief and rehabilitation of those affected by cyclone 'Phailin" in Odissa and Andhra Pradesh. United Way of Hyderabad is a major Charity Partner of the Hyd.10 K Run.
Tharuni Team projected  the importance of  'Save the Girl Child"by wearing T-shirts and holding banners as 'No Girl -No World". Nearly 10,000 people participated in the Event,inaugurated by the Police Commissioner of Hyderabad.

Child rights Week Celebrations at Pembarthi and Janagoan on 19-11-2013

Tharuni Celebrated Child Rights week  at Pembarthi and Janagoan in Warangal District.Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, Executive Director Tharuni presided over the Meetings.Head Masters, hundreds of Teachers and students attended . She explained about the Child Rights enactments, while requesting the Teachers to avoid Corporal Punishments to the Students.She also enlightened the Teacher's responsibility to mould the student in a correct manner. Tharuni News letter of this Month which explained about the role of Teachers and Parents and child Rights was distributed along with Tharunopayam pamphlets to the participants.

Children's Day celebrations 2013, at Tharuni Gurukul, Hyderabad.

14th November Chacha Nehru's Birth Day--Chidren's Day Celebrated at Tharuni Gurukul, Hyderabad.
Coordinator of the Gurukul Dr. Hemalatha conducted competitions in different Sports for boys and girls aged from 5 years to 15 years Skipping, Ring Tennis, Musical chairs, Lemon and Spoon, in addition to Essay Writing , Drawing and Music competitions.Children enjoyed playing and participating in the events.Refreshments were distributed at the end of the Meet.
The whole Week being celebrated as 'Library Week, competitions in  Rangoli, Musical Chairs and lemon and spoon were conducted especially for women.
A Meeting was held on 17th, November, Sunday. Jagan Mohan Reddy, Secretary, City Central Library, presided over the Meeting.He advised the Children to improve Reading and Writing Skills which will help them in their future endeavors .Tharuni Director Mamatha Raghuveer,  Sadguru Prasad, Retd. District and Sessions Judge,Rami Reddy Retd. Senior Executive of Road Transport Corporation,Krishna Reddy, Librarian of the Branch Library, champapet, Nagamani Prasada Rao were the Guests of Honour. Children participated in cultural programs. Prizes were distributed to the winners, for both women and children.Dr. Hemalatha, thanked one and all for the cooperation extended to the Tharuni Gurukul for last ten years.

Youth Workshops at Mulugu and Warangal by Tharuni on 6th & 7th November 2013

Tharuni organized PNDT Workshops for the Young National Service Scheme Volunteers from different colleges to enlighten them on the issue of Female Infanticide, under the Scheme "To Save the Girl Child", on 6th at Mulugu and on 7th November  at Warangal..Dr.Mamatha  explained the importance to save the girl child ,as there will be' No Girl--No World" for the future citizens.The NSS Volunteers should propagate this idea among the youth, she suggested. She also enlightend on the PNDT Act.
Rallies by students were conducted in all the Five Divisions of Warangal District where Tharuni is propagating the issue, and pamphlets were distributed . NSS coordinators, Teaching Staff Principals and Hundreds of students participated in the Events and took pledge to save the 'Girl Child'.

P.N.D.T. Workshops by Tharuni in October 2013

Tharuni conducted P.N.D.T. four  more  Workshops  in different Mandal headquarters as part of  creating awareness on prenatal diagnostic tests, to save the girl child., to the ASHA workers, Anganwadi Workers, village Heads, Officials and Young women and men.The following are the Dates and places of the Workshops conducted.. On 25th October 2013 ACTION AID and Tharuni conducted 2 K Run on the Necklace Road, Tank Bund ,Hyderabad inaugurated by The Chair Person  of A.P.Womens'Commission, Smt  Tripurana Venkatratnam to create awareness on the issue of infanticide of girl children. Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer,different School Children and students and General public participated enthusiastically in the event.

'International Day of the Girl Child' Celebrations by Tharuni on 11th October 2013

Tharuni celebrated International Day of the Girl Child at Warangal in a befitting  and unique way on 11th October 2013.The Warangal  District Collector G.Kishan launched a SMS Help Line "Tharunopayam"with the Mobile Number--9000243000, through which Tharuni helps the children in distress. 'Tharunopayam' finds immediate solution for the problems the children face.It works for the children up to 18 years of age.If they have any doubts or problems on Health, Nutrition, Child Rights, Child related Laws, they can send SMS. They get everything on such issues, clarified..Not only children themselves, but also their Kith and kin or friends can send SMS to 9000243000. A team of Experts in the fields will help the children.

We help with--;
1.The children can get their doubts clarified. Solve the problems.
2.They can stop Child Marriages.
3.Admit Child Labour in Schools.
4.Stop Child Trafficking.
5.Inform female infanticide.
6.Inform Sale of Children.
7.Protect children/young women from sexual violence.
8.Get the elder Persons punished for their Child Abuse

Thus "Tharunopayam"tries its best to solve the problems of the voiceless children, who cannot assert their rights, with just a Short Message Service ,Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer Executive Director, Tharuni Organisation stated in this context.
The District Collector also released 'Tharuni News Letter" a special issue on Child rights,POCSO Act 2013,Child abuse and Corporal punishment in Schools, and other Child related issues.

Tharuni & ACTION AID INDIA --Conducting Gram Sabhas in Chityal Mandal.

Tharuni could identify 25 villages of Chityala Mandal in Warangal District, with lowest Girl child sex ratio of 558 for one thousand boys. So in order to protect the girl children, under 'Save the Girl Child ' Project,.Tharuni in collaboration with ACTION AID INDIA has undertaken 'Gram Sabhas' (Village Meetings) . The village officials, pregnant women, youth, and villagers are addressed by Tharuni Coordinators on the issues of how to protect the girl children without discrimination, by providing equal opportunities, and taking prenatal care without sex determination tests etc.
The people are also advised to take pledge to 'Save the girl child'.

P.N.D.T. Workshops in Warangal District by Tharuni in September 2013

Tharuni identified 15 Mandals ,(under the Government of India Medical and Health Project) where the girls'  Sex ratio is lower  than 900/ 1000 boys.(820 to 873) So it was planned to conduct ground level awareness workshop for each mandal, involving all local officials and non officials.

of Diagnostic Centers, Local N.G.Os, Sarpanches, and frontline workers like, Anganvadi Workers, Asha Workers, ANMs, and Media Personnel.
Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, while presiding the Workshops enlightens the status of Girl Child,
and reasons for low sex ratio in their Mandals. She also presents in detail about the P.N.D.T. Act. The Participants in their turn explain their experiences and discuss the problems they face. All of them pledge to 'Save the Girl child', and create awareness among the public, on this issue. The Nallabelli Meet brought out the news of lack of brides leading to go to Maharashtra for alliances.

Age for Consensual Sex--Round Table Meet--by A.P.B.H.S;& Tharuni on 11-09-2013 at Hyderabad

Con-Sensual Sex includes involvement of  a man and woman , voluntarily or in voluntarily, relating themselves and participate in a  sexual activity. The right age for sexual relationship, in the present scenario is a point of discussion raised by A.P. Balala Hakkula Sangham and Tharuni Organisation, before the Public, in the Round Table Meet, organised on 11th September 2013 , at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram, Hyderabad.. The Eminent  Speakers were from different fields,like Advocates, Doctors Sexologist,Psychologist,Child Rights Activists, Journalists, Child Welfare committee Chair Persons, Members, and Social activists,who  pointed out that consensual sex with a girl below 18 years of age is a crime.

The recent Delhi High Court Judgement  in a different context, found out that consensual sex with an under 18 girl by the person , who married her  later,  would not be an offence, according to Protection of Children from Sexual Offences(POCSO) Act.. But it was pointed out in the Judgement that a great responsibility lies  on the people , including Police in spreading and creating public awareness, about the impact of girl or boy , marrying at a tender age or indulging in unsafe sexual activities. 

The recent  Criminal Law Amendment Act of 2013 , also fixed the"  Age of Consent" for any sexual activity , as 18 years, based on the definition of a child. The Speakers opined that the the health of a woman does not permit for early marriages.. So any sexual activity , irrespective of presence of consent with a woman , below the age of 18, will constitute as statutory rape. 

The Sexologist and Psychologist found that there is a difference between Sex education and sexuality education for children. Parents and Teachers should feel free to enlighten the Children on sexuality education , breaking the myths , without moral policing .They are the role models and their attitudes are the lessons to the youth. The children must be taught , what is good touch and what is bad touch , while moving with their kith and kin and friends. Nowadays, children are dumped with lot of information , which may sometimes mislead them The Media should enable the future generation to grow in a right direction, the Speakers opined. The youth can indulge in sexual relationships after getting physical as well as psychological maturity, for which the right age for a girl is 18 years and for a boy is 21 years. 

The Round Table Meet really initiated  further research and deliberations on an important social issue faced by the present and future generations for a better understanding of human relationships.

Child Welfare Committee Warangal received award-31-07-2013 among four Southern States

SATHI (Society for Assistance to Children in Difficult Situation),Bangalore/Raichur , conducted two day workshop to look into functioning of CWCs , strengthening aspect, to share best practices and experiences among the four States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Goa, at Hubli , on 30th & 31st July 2013. Seventeen CWCs presented six months review of their activities before the Judges. Among them 21   best practices adopted by CWC Warangal , presented by the Chair Person Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, were very much appreciated and given as the best CWC among all of them. Herself and Sri Thirupathi, Member, received the Award of 15000/- Rupees, and Memento from SATHI and Jamshedji TATA Trust.
CWC Warangal could rescue 248 Child Labour, out of them 109 were given compensation of 4.24 Lakhs, in the mode of National Savings Certificates in their names. CWC also could stop 68 child marriages during that period, rescued many children, infants,taken care at Govt. Homes to be adopted legally later.The amount will be used for the children in distress.
Congratulations to the CWC Team of Members for their sincere efforts in serving the Children in need.

'Sensitization on Prohibition of Child Marriages, Law and Social Perceptions' at A.P. Judicial Academy, by Tharuni & I.I.P.A.

Tharuni Executive Director Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer and Dr. P. Hemalatha Devi, Executive Member, I.I.P.A., addressed the Newly Selected 65 Jr. Civil Judges at A.P. Judicial Academy  from 10 a.m to 1 p.m on 10th July 2013 on the topic"Sensitization on Prohibition of Child Marriages, Law and Social Perceptions".Director of the Academy, Dt Judge  Sri Avadhani , Addl and Jt Directors, Faculty Members, I.I.P.A. Treasurer Dr. Avn. Reddy attended  the seminar.
Dr. Hemalatha, in her presentation explained the plight of girl children with early marriages. Marriage creates a social bond for the family, leading to human development. Judiciary is an integrator of  values in the society. It has to bridge the gap between Law and Justice, with human touch and social conciousness, while implementing the law of the land..
Dr. Mamatha , in her power point presentation for  two hours, explained the prohibition of child marriages, in a social context, how it ruins the life of the girl child, and role of  Tharuni in combating the social evil for the last one decade.She quoted the Prime Minister's statement,saying 'Court plays  a pivotal role as a catalyst, an organizer, a mentor, an umpire, a participant, and above all a role model.'  While discussing on the details of the Prohibition Act of 2006 in detail, she made an appeal to Judicial Officers to try to eradicate early marriages by  following these few points.

1. Kindly improve the registration of cases against child marriages, within their purview.
2. Try to keep the enforcement machinery in their place.
3. Encourage Public Prosecutors to take interest in Child marriage cases.
4. Guide the Police to submit correct evidence. 
5. Take punitive action in few cases at least to create fear among the people.
6. Encourage compulsory registration of marriages to combat child marriages.
7. Take suo motto  cognizance of offences under the Act.
8. Sec.13 (4)-Judges are Prohibition Officers in mass marriages.
9. Educate Panchayat members to file complaints and report child marriages.
10. Educate people at large on this issue through Lok Adalats, Legal services Authorities,and awareness camps.
11.  Pursue to set up separate child help line for children to resist child marriages.
12. Please remember to decide cases  in the best interest of the child.

P C.P..N.D.T Workshops at four Divisions in Warangal District-May, June 2013 by Tharuni

Tharuni conducted P.C. P. N. D. T.  Divisional level, Stakeholders Sensitization and Consultation Work shops in another four divisions in Warangal District in May and June, to create awareness among the Doctors , Anganwadi workers and A N Ms , Technicians of Diagnostic centers and Police. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India supported the Project, involving Tharuni to conduct awareness programs.The District Collector, District Medical and Health Officers, and Revenue  Divisional Officers at divisional level participated in the Workshops.

Tharuni-Workshop on P.C.P.N.D.T.Act- I. E. C . Project at Mahbubabad on 10th May 2013

Tharuni conducted  a oneday  Workshop on how to combat female foe'ticide and also to create awareness on P.C.P.N.D.T Act. to develop a healthy sex ratio among people on 10th May at Mahbubabad . Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, Director Tharuni  presided the Workshop and enlightened the participants , about the Enactment.. Sri Bikshya Naik, Revenue Divisional Officer, Mahabubabad, Warangal District, reiterated the need of protecting our future generations by understanding the importance of prohibiting sex determination tests, as a social responsibility.He said , Science and Technology have to be used for genuine interest to protect the fetus, not for eliminating it. The problems of gender discrimination,illiteracy, drug addiction, child marriages are social evils, he stated. They are leading to poverty, female foe'ticide, sale of girl children , which need to be tackled soon. Dr. Mamatha spoke about the programs of Tharuni to save the girl child from all social evils.. The workshop was attended by Indian Medical Association President Dr. B. Nehru, Secretary Dr. T. Kumaraswamy, M. ArjunReddy, B. Venkatramulu, S.P.H.O. Lakshman Rao, ACDPO Mary, Usharani, ICDS supervisors, Asha workers, ANMs and Doctors, and Diagnostic Center Technicians from the Division. Dr. Mamatha also made a power point presentation on  female foeticide to enlighten the participants.  

S.P.R. School Children's Gesture under Kids Help Kids-18th April 2013

The Kids Help Kids Compaign of Tharuni is yielding fruits. Tharuni  extends its gratitude to the Management and Principal  Smt.Sivakumari for inspiring their School children to contribute their might for the welfare and progress of other needy students to be educated.
The Students of the school have saved money from the pocket money given by their parents to help the needy in the society, particularly the poor students. They could make small drops of water into a ocean ,
One fine morning the Principal of SPR School Warangal rang up to Tharuni to send few poor students who are unable make their two ends  meet and continue their studies. Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, Director , Tharuni, took three young women to the School. The Principal  arranged to pay Rupees 10,000 to Yamuna, Second Year Pharmacy Student, Rupees 5000/- to  Swathy, 2nd Year Engineering Student, and Rupees 5000/- to Sunita, Inter 2nd Year Student. Dr. Mamatha expressed her gratitude to the Principal, Staff and Students of SPR School for their contribution to the girls.
Tharuni Team appreciates the gesture of  School children. It may inspire many more schools to' Help Ever & Serve Other' under the concept 'Kids Help Kids'.

Seminar deliberations on 'Adapillalu-Athmarakshana'--continued

Smt. Satyavathi ,Editor Bhoomika, asked every one to stop calling girl child as  'Adapilla',and call her as 'garalapatti' or 'ladlee'.She hoped that atleast 'Nirbhaya Act' may be properly implemented to protect the girl child and women.Many legal enactments are not totally implemented , she said. Hence, women should learn to file complaints, with proper evidences, to implicate the culprits.
Smt.Sobha I.F.S. Addl. Prl. C.C.F, stated that youth should learn the values of our great Indian culture, and change should come from the heart, to respect women in the society.
The chief Guest Smt. Ramalakshmi I.F.S., Commissioner, Sericulture, Govt of A.P. while giving the keynote address said that India has become a'Terrorist Country" with regard to women. Globally our country may be 'black listed'soon, as many countries are asking their women to not to visit India.We should take the slogan now to 'Break the Silence'as India has a great tradition of treating their women as 'Goddesses'. We must save our Joint Family system, for which we have to start a Second 'Freedom Struggle' for Women. Multipolar approach can help  to improve the situation and not the Legal enactments and punitive measures she said.She appealed to all the Women to help their own sisters in fighting against the injustice.
The Cartoon depicting the atrocities against women in different stages of their life cycle were drawn on the Banner by Mr. Sridhar the eminent Cartoonist., was appreciated by one and all.
Thus the Seminar the first of its kind, held immediately after the Enactment of the Act Against Atrocities on Women,(nicknamed as Nirbhaya Act) will certainly,motivates the People to draw more deliberations in near future.  The efforts of  Tharuni and A.P. Balalahakkula Sangham  are appreciable.After Nirbhaya's incident in New Delhi, women are afraid to come out of their houses.Media is very active to report such types of cases. Media need to change to report more against the Culprit, along with their photos, so that socially they will be boycotted. Every citizen certainly appreciates the Government of India for its timely action in initiating and promulgating the Act.
Let us all hope the Men and Women of India lead the world , in organizing themselves to live harmoniously and peacefully within the ambit of our great culture and traditions. 

The deliberations of the Seminar"Adapillalu-Athmarakshana',held on 4th April 2013

The Seminar on "Girl Child--Strategies to Protect Herself"(Adapillalu-Athmarakshana) was held on 4th, April, 2013.It was presided over by Sri Achuth Rao, President, A.P. Balala Hakkula Sangham,who  reiterated the importance of Conducting the Seminar, while the" Nirbhaya Act' sighned by the President of India, yesterday.
Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer Director, Tharuni Organisation, explained the objective of the Seminar, so as to identify the problems in changing the mindset and attitudinal changes of male counterparts and parents of the girl child..She also stressed to develop life skills of the girl child and bring out the supporting systems available to protect her.
The seminar started with a high note of excellent performance of Self protection with the techniques of Karate by Young Girls trained. Baby Nidhi also sang a song on girl child and danced, impressing the audience.
Later Ms. Janaki, Director PHIN, explained the problems of differently abled girl children, who  need more supporting systems from the Government.

Ms Vijaya Devi, Member, C.W.C;  R. R. District, stressed the need of Counselling Centers in schools and colleges to solve the problems of Youth and children.
Next,  Retired Mass communications Professor, Dr. P. Hemalatha Devi,advised the girls to develop confidence and bravely cope up if they face any atrocity , while ignoring the guilty feelings, to make the culprits get right punishment.Girls are to behave tactfully, while facing odd situations she said. She also appealed to the Media to highlight the Culprit to get socially boycotted, and also to give information about the punishment he receives for the crime against women.
Dr. Radhka, Psychologist, reiterated that respecting women should start at home. the childhood abuses may transform the individuals into criminals.So the parents should  set right the abnormal behavior of their children from the early stages. ( Continued in the next Blog).

Award to Tharuni Director-8th March 2013

International women's day--An event memorable to Tharuni on 8th. March 2013  at 11A.M
Doordarshan Saptagiri T.V Channel felicitated seven women from the State of Andhra Pradesh
who are achievers in different fields to serve the society.Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, Director Tharuni was one of those Seven Recipients who were honored.Smt.Vimala Narasimhan First lady of Andhra Pradesh was the Chief guest and Smt.Sailaja Suman Director Doordarshan and other officials graced the occasion.

Rural Tourism Website inaugurated on 28-01-2013

Director, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department, Sri Kantilal Donde, I.A.S., had launched two Websites on 28th January 2013 in his Office, -'www.cherialpaintings.com' & 'www.pembarthibrassware.com' -as part of Rural Tourism Projects, facilitated by Tharuni.The websites were developed by "Doer's Guild". Executive Director of Tharuni, Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, Directors of 'Doer's Guild' Sathvik Ponangi, Ravi Verma, and officials of A.P.Tourism Dept. attended the inauguration function. Rural Tourism Brochures on Cheriyal and Pembarthi were also released by Sri. Kantilal, in this occasion. Tharuni also developed tour packages to help the Artisans in improving marketing , while attracting Tourists to visit the places and explore the Art.The Director appreciated the efforts of Tharuni , developing and motivating the Artisans to train the future generations to continue the great art.

64th Republic Day celebrations by Tharuni

64th Indian Republic Day was celebrated by Tharuni on 26th January 2013 at its Warangal Office premises. Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer hoisted the Indian National Flag. Tharuni Team Members, office bearers,neighbours,community people,men and women and children attended the Function.. National Anthem and patriotic songs were sung. Sweets were distributed.
Evening Tharuni Kakatiya Cultural Team enacted a Puppet Show "Gutkha tho Gutukku" under the supervision of Vallampatla Nageswara Rao, Teacher, famous Writer and Artist of Warangal, and Bhavani  Tharuni puppet trainer and teacher, in the Public Gardens. Thousands of people watched the show with pin drop silence, as it was a message oriented theme campaigned by Tharuni on the ban of Gutkha, a decade ago.The then District Collector ordered a ban on the sale of Gutkha near the schools in the District. Now the Andhra Pradesh Government  prohibited it all over the State as it is a health hazard.
Tharuni Gurukul and The Branch Library Authorities of Champapet, Hyderabad, along with local people, youth and  children  hoisted the National flag at their premises.Dr Hemalatha, Vithal Reddy , retired Professors,and the Youth spoke on the importance of education, health and  human values, role of Media in the present social scenario.They observed silence for two minutes for the sacrifices made by our Army Jawans, and the Freedom Fighters  in protecting our Country.Children sang patriotic songs.Fruits and biscuits were distributed.

National Girl Child Day celebrations by Tharuni

Tharuni celebrated 'National Girl Child Day" in the interior villages of Warangal District in Andhra Pradesh.on 24th January 2013.It was really a pleasant surprise to all of us that, the Balika Sanghas intiated by Tharuni long ago are being continued for years together. On this occasion the Balika Sanghas of Singarajupalli, and Nirmaala villages of Deveruppula Mandal , with the cooperation of their Zilla Parshad High school Head Masters, and Teachers,conducted  the National Girl Child Day Event  with lively speeches by them,on the role  and importance of girl child in human life. Cultural events were also held by them.
Everil Spencer, Project Manager, 'Voice 4 Girls' and Executive Director "Tharuni" Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, were  invited  as Guests of Honor for the occasion.Everil spoke on the unity among the girls will certainly boosts up their energies and empower them  Dr. Mamatha appreciated the girls for continuing the Balika Sanghas for their mutual support and progress among their communities and villages.
Everil and Dr. Mamatha also visited "Kasthuriba Gandhi Balika vidyalaya  at Bachannapet where the orphans, and school dropout girl children are being educated. Everil promised to conduct special classes in English and Life Skills to the girls on behalf of'' Voice 4 Girls'.
