Training for Balika sanghas on 12th December 2010

Tharuni coordinators and Anganwadi workers jointly conducted training classes in a playful manner and seminars on leadership qualities and adolocent and reproductive health to the Tharuni Balika Sanghas for more than 100 girls at Machapur in Geesukonda Mandal on12th December 2010. These Training programmes will also be conducted among the other three mandals very soon.

International Disabled Day celebrated on3rd December

Tharuni conducted competitions in games and sports for the differently abled children in the three mandals of Station Ghanpur, Geesukonda and Dharma sagar and prizes were distributed to the winners on the occasion of International disabled Day on 3rd December 2010, in which many children participated with enthusiasm.

Devaruppula Mandal added by UNICEF to Tharuni

The 4th Mandal of Devaruppula near Jangoan in Warangal district is allotted to Tharuni by the UNICEF, to work for the empowerment of girl child. The Tharuni Team already started conducting survey on out of school children and number of child labour,and other social development issues like child marriages etc. from 1st week of December.

Training on Birth Registrations by Tharuni on30th november

Birth registration is very important for a human being for his/her future development.Tharuni under the UNICEF Project has trained the Auxuliary Nurses cum Midwives and the ASHA workers to create awareness on the importance of compulsory registration of a newly born child, to the Mothers. Village Secretaries are the Registration officers. So the village secretaries from the two mandals of Stn. Ghanpur and Geesukonda too have attended the training programme.

Felicitations to Short Film Producers

Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer felicitated the Short films Producers, Directors, Technicians, Editors, Actors and all the young women/Children who made the films under the Participatory video Production, in the Tharuni Office at Neelam Enclave on the evening of 17th November. Vinay Bhaskar, Member of Legislative Assembly from Station Ghanpur was invited as Chief Guest for the occasion, who had appreciated the efforts of the girls,in making the films and also Surekha and Dr Mamatha for educating them on film production. Dr. Mamatha felicitated the MLA and the girls with mementos. The MLA gave cash prize of one thousand each to Anusha and Radhika who could not continue their college education for want of financial resources.

Tharuni Gurukul anniversary& Library Week Celebrations

Tharuni Gurukul and the Branch Library at Nagarjuna colony , Champapet, Hyderabad jointly celebrated the Children's Day festival and Library Week from 14th November 2010. Chacha Nehru's Birth Day is a Day of festival for Children. The Gurukul children celebrated it in a befitting manner by honouring Nehruji and playing sports and games. Competitions were held for children in different games. Essay competition, Elocution, Drawing competitions were conducted on 15th and Rangoli and Musical Chairs were held for women on 16th November.
The prize distribution Ceremony was held on 17th November 2010. Sama Krishna Reddy, Chairman, City Grandhalaya Sanstha, Indira Seva Sadan Corporator Manchireddy Prasanth Kumar Reddy, Sadguru Prasad, Retired District and Sessions Judge were Guests of honour for the event. Dr. Hemalatha Devi, Director Tharuni Gurukul and PVM. Krishna Reddy Librarian conducted the Program, in which local community elders participated along with children who received the prizes and certificates. Women also received certificates for tailoring and costume design trained by B. Nirmala at Tharuni Gurukul.

Tharuni bags Awards for short Films by Tharunulu

The small Girls with their little hands could make six short films relating to different problems, working for 70 days under the able guidance of Surekha and Dr. Mamatha. The result they received is, long lasting and a great land mark in their profile.
Tharuni girls got two awards out of their five films from among the 105 films, displayed at the CESS Auditorium brought by all NGOs from all over the State.The UNICEF in collaboration with the Department of Mass Communications of Central University of Hyderabad conducted the Short Films display under ' My Frames 2010' on 16th and 17th November 2010 at Center for Economics and Social Sciences at Ameerpet, Hyderabad. Eleven films were selected by the Jury as best films. 'Mulla Bandham' under the Child Rights category and ' Atavidupu' under culture and tradition were selected as best films made by the Tharuni students. The other four films are 'Letha Manasulu', 'Akasamlosagam', 'Athiva chethilo Arogyam', and 'Pelli Pramanalu'. All the films can be seen in 'U' Tube.The whole Tharuni team appreciates the efforts of the group led by Anusha, Soujanya, Radhika and others and congratulate them.

Dt.Child Consultation Workshop at Warangal

Tharuni conducted District Child Consultation Workshop in collaboration with UNICEF and Alliance for Child Rights at Warangal today. 80 Different categories of male and female children, rural as well as urban, representing from disabled, HIV affected, child labourers,school drop outs, orphans and others actively participated in the work shop and discussed their problems. The outcome was very interesting and they made declarations on different issues like parental care, Educational care, health, food and nutrition and other social and financial needs.
Four children will be selected among them to represent their district before the Government Policy Makers and Administrators at Hyderabad on 20th November 2010.

Paritcipatory video short film production by Tharunulu

Participatory video film making training was given to Surekha, Tharuni Volunteer, in July, August by the Central University of Hyderabad in collaboration with UNICEF. In the last two weeks of October 2010 she trained more than 20 girls from Balika Sanghas of Tharuni on short film making and documentaries. The girls made six short films on different issues related to young women and girl children under the guidance of Surekha and Dr. Mamatha and Sathya Sodhana film company. The issues are on traditional games, health, food and nutrition, child marriages, importance of marriage registration and so on. The films will be displayed in the Indian film festival conducted by UNICEF in the middle of November.
The girls are very enthusiastic in making these films and they are eager to get good recognition and prize winning in the festival. We appreciate their efforts and interest shown in film making.

women in engineering affinity group 8th oct

National Institute of Technology in collaboration with Tharuni inaugurated the Workshop on women in engineering. the affinity group , by the Students of I EEE Branch, from 8th October for three days in their campus. Director , Tharuni, Prof. Radhakrishnamacharya, Dean Students Affairs, Prof. Siva Sarma, Convener, I EEE Students, Prof. Sailaja Kumari and Engineering Students inaugurated the Program. 35 Girl Students studying 9th and 10th classes in Government Schools in Geesukonda Mandal are participating in the workshop, enriching themselves on the importance of technology and importance of engineering education for women.

Tharuni cradle at Bus Depots to keep unwanted babies

Tharuni today (7th October 2010) kept a Cradle(uyyala) at Hanamkonda Bus Depot of Warangal city to put the unwanted children in it, with the permission of Road Transport Corporation. The Regional Manager R.T.C. Gangadhar, RDD Chandrika,PD Ramulu, Director Tharuni Mamatha Raghuveer and officials of Women Welfare Department participated in the event. The cradles will also be kept at other Bus Depots along with banners to educate the parents.

Training for Trainers for Anganwadi workers

Dr. Mamatha, Director ,Tharuni, inaugurated the TOT for the Anganwadi workers at Three Mandals of Geesukonda, Dharmasagar and Station Ghanpur , under the Child Protection Project of UNICEF. The AW Ws will train more than 200 Balika Sanghas (girls groups) on the issues of Child Marriages, Child labour in order to eradicate those social evils. The sanghas will also be trained for the all round development of the girls.
At the Meeting the Anganwadi workers expressed their anguish for not recognizing their services by the people and the Government, as they undertake different services at the local level. Mamatha while appreciating their services, held that they are the backbone for the empowerment of women in Rural India.

Nutrition Week celebrations closure workshop21st September 2010

The Nutrition Week Celebrations Closure work Shop was held on 21st September 2010 at Warangal, to review the successful conduct of awareness program for the parents in feeding their children, in the district.Regional Dy. Director Abdhi Chandrika presided over the workshop.Shivalker Reddy, Coordinator of CARE Project and the Six NGOs who have coordinated the Programme with the help of the Women Welfare and Child Development Department participated the Work shop, along with CDPOs, and Supervisors.The Monitoring visits' observations were discussed in the workshop. The circulation of feeding bowls to all Anganwadi workers could create awareness among the Mothers.Tharuni conducted best mothers competitions, which was successful in creating awareness among them. Tharuni submitted its Report along with recommendations to improve the nutritonal levels of the children.

Nutrition Week celebrations

Tharuni in collaboration with CARE and Women Welfare Department of Government of A.P. initiated Nutrition Week Celebrations from 1st September 2010. Launching of the campaign was held for the 170 CDPOs of the District of Warangal. Dhanwanthi Chair Person of Zilla Parishad was the Chief Guest of the function M.L.A. Dr. Rajayya, Dr. Mamatha Tharuni Director, P.D of I.C.D.S. Ramulu ., UNICEF Dt. Manager Rajasekhar, Women welfare Department Officials, Tharuni Coordinators and CDPOs attended the Program. The CDPOS will conduct Project wise training of the Anganwadi Workers in all Mandal Head Quarters, who will in turn train the women in the villages. Each Anganwadi Worker is given a cup and spoon to measure the feeding of the baby.Pamphlets were released to create awareness of Anganwadi worker about nutrition.
They will conduct competitions in the Centers for Mothers on complementary food. Best Mothers will be given certificates.

Tharuni before Sri Krishna Committee on 1st september 2010

Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer was asked to submit her representation before the Sri Krishna Committee on 1st September 2010 at Station Ghanpur about the issues of women in this region. The day being Krishnashtami, Dr Mamatha requested Justice Sri Krishna to do justice to the women in the region by including a separate package in his Report for the development of the women, who are a neglected lot for a long time. The Judge assured to do his best, as Lord Krishna showed dharma in Bhagavadgita.

Dr. Mamatha enrolled as an Advocate

Tharuni Director, Dr. Mamatha is admitted as Advocate on the roll of the Bar Council of the State of Andhra Pradesh on 26th August 2010. Tharuni team congratulate her on this occasion and wish that she will do more service to the needy women in the society.

Independence Day celebrations by Tharuni 15-08-2010

Tharuni hoisted the Tricolour Flag at the new Office Premises ( Neelam Enclave,Subedari, Hanamkonda, Warangal) and also at Hyderabad at the Tharuni Gurukul Premises as part of the 64th Independence Day celebrations on 15th August 2010. The office staff, coordinators of the Projects, and many number of Tharuni girls attended the functions and paid their respects to the National Flag and National Leaders. Local community leaders women and children participated in the event. Refreshments were distributed after speeches by our Director and elders.
Tharuni cultural Team played skits and dances at the official function held by the Collector, Warangal, at the parade Grounds. They were given certificates and mementos.

Interactive sessions at Three Mandals to SH Groups

Interactive sessions are being conducted at the three Mandals of Station Ghanpur, Geesukonda, and Dharmasagar from 5th August by Tharuni in which Self Help Groups women participating to discuss various issues of Personality Development, to bring up children, moral values to be adopted and the problems they face in their day to day life.Fifty percent of women participated at Geesukonda Meeting included widows, who lost their husbands due to alcohol, drug addiction and such other causes. Youth, particularly Young boys get addicted to these habits and ruin their life. Many die of cancer, HIV AIDS, liver disorders. Single parents really face many problems in upbringing their children with good life skills and moral values.Tharuni is creating a Forum to discuss on these issues in these sessions.

Breast Feeding Week celebrations at Stn. Ghanpur

In connection with Breast Feeding Celebrations Tharuni Coordinated a Rally by 100 Anganwadi workers, young mothers, officials and non officials to propagate breast feeding by mothers to their children until 2 years, at Station Ghanpur on 4th August. If the newly born kids are given breast feeding within one hour of their birth it will immunize them from all life long health problems. Placards were displayed in the rally about all information on the issue. According to staistics 24% women alone are giving breast feed to their children.A Meeting was held in which participants spoke on the issue.

Validictory Meeting of cultural Programs at Dharmasagar

Dharmasagar Mandal Praja Parishad President Rajugari Raghu presided over the Valedictory Meeting of the Cultural Programs and Kalajathas conducted by Tharuni Cultural Team of 13 Girl Members in 14 villages at nights and in 14 Schools in the day time successfully. The Meeting was attended by Sarpanches, Ward Members and parents and Students. The Girls were given Mementoes in appreciation of their services. MPP praised the services of Tharuni and spoke on the need of the Public to realise the need of Child Protection, from child marriages and child labour.

Meeting on Child Protection-counselling,2nd August 2010

Meeting was held at Geesukonda High School to Counsel the Sarpanches, Ward Members and School Children, and their Parents about the achievement of goals, life skills and values of life for children.Smt. Swarnalatha Girl Child Development Officer, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. presided the Meeting and addressed the gathering, along with Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer, Director , Tharuni. Young Girls from 8th class to 10th class took pledge to not to marry till they achieve their goals and till they attain 21 years of age.

Legal awareness camp at Komalla

The District Legal Services Authority of warangal District and Tharuni jointly conducted the Legal awareness camp at Komalla of Geesukonda Mandal. It was attended by more than two hundred school students along with parents and local villagers.Smt. Prema Rajeswari Judge addressed the gathering on the legal issues of Prohibition of child Marriages, compulsory registration of marriages, and Right to Education for children and so on. Dr Mamatha, Director Tharuni presided over the Meeting.

MOU with Govt. College for women by Tharuni

Tharuni and Government College for Women Begumpet, Hyderabad have jointly made a Memorandum of Understanding for two years to collaborate with each other in conducting awareness programs for young women of the college on different issues, cultural programs and News letters, seminars etc to empower them.

Participatory Vedio- TOT by UNICEF

Surekha Adimulam is undergoing Training for six weeks in July and August 2010 on the Participatory Video Programs conducted by the Department of Mass communications at the University of Hyderabad in collaboration with UNICEF Hyderabad. In turn she will train the 30 Girls selected from Balika sanghas of Tharuni to make short films and Documentaries on the issues related to girl children to telecast in the Indian Film Festival.

2148 children joined schools in Three Mandals

The UNICEF in collaboration with Tharuni and the Department of Education could make a drive to admit the drop out children and freshers also into Schools from 12th June to 27th June 2010. Rallies and enforcement drives led 2148 children into schools in the three Mandals of Station Ghanpur,Geesukonda and Dharmasagar of Warangal District.
Tharuni Gurukul children who are poor and under privileged received Note Books, Stationery and small amounts of scholarship from the donations given by Smt. Sujatha, Dr. Amar Jyothi Jaiswal, Mr. Mohanan and Mr. Sadguru Prasad and others.
The Jhansi Lioness Club International of Warangal was kind enough to donate Hundred School Uniforms to the Upper Primary School children of Chatampalli village in Dharmasagar Mandal.
A Sewing Machine was donated by Sri A. N. Murthy ( Bobby) and Smt Kamakshi of Vizag to Sarada at Stn. Ghanpur, a young widow who lost her husband in an accident.

UNICEF Training to the Trainers,19th,20th July 2010

U N I C E F Warangal District conducted Training to the Trainers of Balika Sanghas ( girls groups) on 19th and 20th July 2010. Eighteen coordinators of Tharuni participated in the programme and underwent training on issues like discrimination against women, child marrriages, HIV AIDS, child labour and so on in an innovative way by games and sports. The trainees were inspired by the novel methods of training and they in turn try to impress on the Balika sanghas about the issues.

Tharuni in the South Indian Meet of combating Child Marriages

Tharuni represented by its Director as Resource person in the National Seminar on Combating Child Marriages on 14th and 15th July 2010, held at Bangalore, conducted by N.I. P. C. I. D.
Dr. Mamatha highlighted the grave situation caused by child marriages of girl child all over the country leading against the progress of the nation. She made a request to all participants to impress upon every citizen of India to educate the child . She also asserted that compulsory registration of marriages certainly combats the child marriages.

Kalajathas in three Mandals by Tharuni &UNICEF

Tharuni in collaboration with UNICEF-CHILD PROTECTION Project is conducting kalajathas (cultural ) Programmes in the three Mandals of Station Ghanpur, Geesukonda, and Dharmasagar of Warangal District from 13th July 2010 to 30th July in more than 30 villages. Villagers are participating actively in the events along with village officers and Govt. Departments officials. The kalajathas and palle suddulu are imparting awareness among them about combating child marriages, child labour, HIV AIDS and importance of girl child education etc.

Right to Education Act rules, 13th July 2010

Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer represented the N.G.O's of Warangal District after prolonged discussions by them on the Rules to be framed to the Right to Education Act , which are being processed very soon by the Government.
Let us all hope that Right to Education Act may bring hundred percent literacy rate to all the children in the country.

Compulsory Registration of marriages are being initiated by Tharuni, for the security and protection of young women's legal rights. The Child Marriages can be curbed by registration of marriages. Village Officers are being requested to register the marriages. Registration of Marriages are compulsory under the Act and if the officers fail to register they have to undergo the punishment of three months jail, in addition to fine of 1000 rupees fine.
Director, Tharuni initiated it in Dharmasagar on 12th July 2010 to the love marriage of Gangarapu Raju and Rajitha. Mandal Parishad Chairman Rajugari Raghu, MPDO Raja Rao, and MPTC Prabhudas attended the ceremony.

Tharuni condemns the deaths of infants at MGM Hospital

Tharuni Director brought to the notice of State Human Rights Commission the ghastly deaths of infants admitted in the M.G.M. Hospital, Pediatrics Department, Warangal, due to lack of neonatal care, and fecilities. It was requested that the SHRC to visit the Hospital and conduct a full pledged enquiry for the cause of deaths of the infant children and also arrange to pay compensation to the bereaved parents, by suggesting to the Authorities to avoid recurrence of such cases in future.

Rajitha's Marriage on17th May 2010

Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer , Tharuni Director and Smt Nalini Sobha, Warden of B.C. Girls Hostel, Station Ghanpur, and all Electronic Media Representatives, attended the Marriage of Rajitha, whose story was published in our Blog, as well as in our News Letter, earlier. Even though She is born without hands, She is differently able person with so many talents. She has chosen a right person to be her life partner who came to share her life with him. Tharuni Team congratulate for a Happy and peaceful married life to the newly wed couple.

Police officer's kind gesture

Station Ghanpur Sub Inspector of Police Mr. David Raju came forward to distribute steel dinner plates to 200 school children to eat their Mid Day meal in the Govt. School Pamunuru village to day. Tharuni Director Dr. Mamatha and the Head Master and teachers appreciated the kind gesture of the Cop who has spent his personal amount to help the children.
The police could stop child marriages of two 6th class girl students in the school during this season.
The girl is 12 years and the Bride Groom is of 27 years of age. The Sarpanch of the village Mahender assured The Police and Tharuni that in future no child Marriages will be held in the village.The Parents of the children were counselled about the ill effects of child marriages.

A girl of 16 years Sarada was married and her husband met with an accident and died within one year. .Tharuni brought her to its fold and persuaded the Police and the Court to give her compensation. The girl learnt Tailoring at Tharuni center and will be able to make two ends meet with great difficulty if any Philanthropist comes forward to donate her a Sewing Machine.

Tharuni conducted Legal Awareness camp on compulsory Registration of Marriages, in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority for the Village Revenue Officers and Sarpanches at Geesukonda on 17th April 2010. Secretary SLSA Judge Smt. Prema Rajeswari, Lawyer smt. Ratna Manjula enlightened the participants on the advantages of compulsory Registration of Marriages. Mamatha Raghuveer , our Director presided over the camp.

Tharuni in collaboration with State Legal Services Authority, Warangal conducted a Legal Awareness camp for the Village Revenue Officers,Panchayat Secretaries,Sarpanches, C.D. P.Os of Women welfare and child Devt. Department, Purohits and Pastors, to enlighten them on compulsory Registration of Marriages and Child Marriages Restraint Act at Station Ghanpur on 7th March. Dr. Mamatha Raghuveer presided over the camp and Judge and Secretary State Legal Services Authority Smt. Prema Rajeswari and Smt. Rathna Manjula have spoken on the Acts.

samarth Projects reports

Tharuni made surprise visits to Samarth Projects run for rehabilitation of mentally retarded persons by different N.G.O.s, supported by National Trust of Govt. of India at six centers ie: Hyderabad, Kakinada, Tirupathi, Kurnool, Godavari Khani of Karimnagar District, and Manuguru of Khammam District, and sent reports about their functioning during this Month.

Legal Services Authority stopped Child Marriages

Tharuni reported about 18 child marriages to be held very soon, to the UNICEF, government and the Legal Services Authority, Warangal District. The L.S.A conducted enquiry and got 10 marriages stopped today by counseling and negotiation, done to the Parents of both marriage parties. The court got affidavits signed by the parents to that effect. All the parents belong to Geesukonda Mandal, Nandanaik Thanda, Viswanadhapuram, Manugonda and from Dharmasagar Mandal, Devanur, Krishnagudem and other villages. The court threatened them with dire consequences of arrests if they disobey its orders.
Tharuni Appreciates the great spade work done by its coordinators to report the matter to the court. They have faced abuses and filthy languages used by the parents against them. Tharuni Director congratulates the coordinators for their bold gesture to save the lives of the girl children.

Women's Day celebrations by Tharuni

Tharuni celebrated International Women's Day in warangal District. Competitions were held for the Mothers and their girl children in different activities and prizes were distributed. Awareness camps were conducted for the Mothers and and young women against child marriages . Exibitions were conducted in the Three Mandals of Station Ghanpur, Geesukonda and Dharmasagar.
Women's Day was celebrated in Hyderabad Administrative Office of Tharuni. Felicitations were held to the women who did service to the community, as "uttama Mahilalu".
Tharuni Gurukul did special felicitations to Smt Indira Devi, for she accomodated to conduct the Gurukul classes in the Branch Library from 2004, as she has retired from her service.

Child marriage victims on TV9

The child marriage victims were brought to Hyderabad from Warangal by Tharuni Director, to be televised by the popular Telugu News Channel TV9 to day on 16th February. There are child widows also among them. IT will be telecast very soon. The child marriages ruined their lives. Tharuni appeals to Parents that they should first educate their children, empower them to earn their livelihood before they get married.
21 years is the right age for a girl to get married in this 21st century.It can be delayed for few more years if she is not yet settled.An educated and empowered woman is an asset to the family she joins. The future generation will be guided by her. Hope Tharuni 's endeavor in this issue will certainly bring change among the rural people in India.

Uyyala (cradle)Scheme for abandoned child

Tharuni initiated "uyyala (cradle)Scheme in the Government Hospital compound in Warangal, collaborating with Women Welfare and Child Development Department,Integrated Child Development Scheme Officials and D. M. H. S Doctors and UNICEF. This scheme is already existing in some of the Districts in Andhra Pradesh. Tharuni distributed Banners in various hospitals to not to through away an unwanted child in the Dustbin to be eaten away by Dogs and Pigs.The child will be taken care by the sisuvihar of women welfare Dept, and later it can be adopted with due process by any family.A meeting was held in the Hospital compound to enlighten the people. Tharuni's initiative was appreciated.

Today being the National Girl Child Day,rallies are being held in the district and also meetings are being held to discuss the problems of the girl child and also how to overcome them.Tharuni has participated along with other NGOs at District level and conducts rallies at Mandal level.
